You Are Not Your Thoughts
I hope to enlighten you to the fact that thoughts are uncontrollable and impermanent, and that this is a good thing. The majority of people are oblivious to the fact that they are prisoners to their own internal white noise. This is their thoughts, and the fact that they think that they are their thoughts. Thought is pattern and flow, an internal frequency that is unique to everyone, including you. This flow is there whether we like it or not, we cannot control it. However we can control how we respond to this conscious energy.
Thoughts are impermanent.
Try to focus on an object in the room for about half a minute. Its a lot harder than you think isn’t it? This is because we don’t like to be too preoccupied for too long. And notice that once we stop and try to focus our mind wanders. This shows the impermanence of thought; thoughts come as easily as they go, and you tend to latch onto each one as if you made it. Realise that the flow and vibration of thought is always there, however individual thoughts themselves, ones that you think are important or not, surface from the soup of information in your mind then disappear just as quick.
Don’t identify yourself with what you think.
Who you are, what you are and what you think are completely different. Imagine you are thinking that you are worthless, or that maybe no one likes you. Although they seem real and rational when you think them, they are just a tiny per cent of your thousands of conscious thoughts you attend to each day. And who said that you have to attach your identity to them? You let them come; you can let them go as well. I know that they seem rational and real in the moment you are thinking them, but how many times after have you thought to yourself “what was I thinking?” Just because you think depressed thoughts, does not mean that you have to attach yourself to them. It’s easier said then done but with a little practise it can save you from a negative downward spiral.
Become the master of thought.
When you are triggered into an episode, or you start to think irrationally stop what you are doing and concentrate. These are just thoughts, there is nothing real about them except to you. And you determine what your reality is. Notice that you often think you have thoughts, and you are the thinker of these thoughts. Now notice that the thought of thinking is just another thought in itself, and the flow continues as it always has. See how we actually have little control over what we think? This is a good thing because now you can choose which thoughts you identify with, rather than just thinking you are all of them. Become the master, become the observer of your thoughts, embrace the good ones and let the bad ones go, they only stay when you let them.
Thought is a pattern, a pattern that can be directed in certain directions. Learn to become the master of thought and you will perceive yourself in such a different light. Direct yourself towards positivity and steer clear from negativity. I have worked for a long time to train myself to let negative thought go, and continue being my vibrant self. You are not your thoughts; you are what you choose to attach yourself to, as a vessel of which the thoughts come to fruition.
From the ashes, you will rise.
